Bug bite treatment
Ouch! What was that? A Mosquito? A Spider? Just a little Flea?
In most cases a bite only needs a simple bug bite treatment, nothing too complicated. It might swell up, get a bit red and then calm down again. In other cases though, a bite can trigger a full-blown allergic reaction. Lets go over some facts to think about so you'll be ready the next time an itchy spot turns up on your arm from a roving fly or an annoying mosquito. Your most common bite turns into a raised red spot, it gets itchy from the skins reaction to the bugs bite or to chemicals in the bugs saliva. Sometimes the skin may be bleeding or broken, so it's best to wash the area with soap and water and then put some antibiotic ointment onto the bite so it doesn't become infected. There are anti-histamine creams for bug bites available to help with the itching. Remember, don't scratch a bite because it could break the skin and cause it to become infected. covering the wound with a band-aid will help keep out dirt, minimize infection and help you to avoid scratching it with you nails. The less common bites are the ones that cause severe reactions, often due to an allergy you may not have even been aware of beforehand. Anaphylactic shock is a danger in some allergy presentations, if you start to experience wheezing, hives or dizziness, get to a doctor immediately. In some cases these allergies can be life-threatening and possibly fatal if left untreated. If you have a history of allergies, it's best to keep an Epi pen with you at all times in case you have a reaction, it's unknown when and where an allergy could strike, so it's best to be prepared. Bites from certain ants, like red ants or fire ants, are particularly painful and so is the presentation of the bite itself. They often cause a small, pimple-like bump, which can be very painful until it heals. If you have a bite that doesn't heal, or remains as an open sore, visit your doctor immediately because this is a sign of a spider bite, possibly from a poisonous variety. If you do go to the doctor for bug bite treatment, they'll know what to do. They'll examine the bite, perform some tests and will hospitalize you if they feel there is any danger at all. If hospitalized you would be given oral or IV antibiotics and in the cases of a severe spider bite an anti-venom might be administered. |
